I remeber when the teacher taught me the article THE ... Fantastic ... It was always the same ... male and female, singular and plural ... GREAT!!

But in Italian it is QUITE different and is translated as folllows:

il  cavallo = the horse (mas. sing.)

lo studente = the student (mas. sing. with starting letter S or Z)

la mela = the apple (fem. sing. )

i ragazzi = the boys (mas. plur.)

gli studenti = the students (mas. plur with starting letter S or Z)

le mamme = the mothers (fem. plur.)

Just to sum up:

Singular/Plural

IL      /      I

LO      /      GLI

LA      /      LE
